It’s driven by coverage, not a round number. The goal is to capture every spot where something important happens or where you’re exposed: each exterior entrance and exit, the parking lot and approaches, registers or cash-handling areas, loading docks, server/IT rooms, and any blind corners. A small retail storefront might be well covered with 4–8 cameras; a warehouse or multi-entrance facility can need 16, 32, or more. The mistake is buying a “camera kit” off a shelf and hoping it covers the building. For a new business install, IP is the better choice in almost every case. IP cameras deliver far higher resolution (HD to 4K, so you can actually read a face or a plate), run on a single Cat6 cable that carries both data and power over PoE, and support smart features like motion zones and analytics. Analog runs over coax, tops out at lower resolution, and is limited to about 330 feet per run before signal degrades. The one place analog still makes sense is when you already have good coax in the walls and a tight budget — modern HD-over-coax can reuse it. Otherwise, IP over Cat6 is simpler and dramatically better.
Both have a place, and the best setups often use a mix. A local NVR (network video recorder) keeps footage on-site, gives you fast access and no monthly storage fee, and isn’t dependent on your internet — but if the NVR is stolen or damaged, the footage can go with it. Cloud recording stores video off-site, so it survives a break-in or fire and is reachable from anywhere, at the cost of a subscription and bandwidth. For many Brevard businesses we recommend a local NVR for day-to-day retention plus cloud backup of critical cameras, so you get speed and resilience. We size retention (how many days you keep) to your needs and your industry’s requirements.
Yes — remote viewing is standard on the IP systems we install. You get a secure app (and desktop access) to watch live feeds and pull recorded footage from anywhere, plus motion alerts so you’re notified when something happens after hours. We set this up properly and securely — remote access done wrong is a real security hole, so the cameras sit on their own segment and access is locked down, not just port-forwarded and forgotten.

Access control replaces physical keys (which get copied and never returned) with fobs, cards, or mobile credentials you can grant and revoke instantly, set on schedules, and audit — so you know exactly who opened which door and when.
