An unmanaged switch is a black box that just passes everything together on one flat network, with no visibility and no control. Unmanaged gear has its place (extending a few ports in an isolated spot), but for the core of a business network, managed is the right call.
A very small, simple site can technically run on one flat network — but the moment you add guest Wi-Fi, cameras, or VoIP, VLANs earn their keep.
