A 70V (sometimes 25V or 100V) “distributed” system is the standard way to run audio across a large commercial space. Instead of wiring a few speakers directly to an amplifier like a home stereo, a 70V system lets you put many speakers on a single run of wire over long distances, with each speaker set to draw a small amount of power via a “tap.” That’s what makes it practical to cover a whole warehouse, office, or campus evenly. It also makes the system easy to balance — we set taps per speaker so quiet rooms and loud floors all end up at the right level. It’s the right architecture for paging and background music in almost any business.
It depends on ceiling height, the speaker’s coverage angle, and how loud the space is. As a rough idea, ceiling speakers in a typical office (8–10 ft ceiling) each cover a circle of floor, and you space them so the circles overlap slightly for even sound — higher ceilings and noisier rooms need more, spaced tighter or with higher output. A small office might need a handful; a warehouse uses fewer, louder horn speakers aimed across the space. The honest answer is that we do a quick survey and lay it out properly, because too few leaves dead spots and too many just wastes money. Even coverage is the goal, not raw speaker count.
Yes to both, and they work well together. Most commercial setups let staff page directly from a desk phone extension — dial a code and announce to a zone or the whole building — which is why we design paging alongside your phone system. The same speaker infrastructure can carry background music when it’s not being used to page, with paging automatically taking priority (the music ducks or mutes during an announcement). You control music sources and levels per zone, so the lobby and the shop floor can be completely different.
Yes — that’s a design problem we solve all the time. Loud environments need higher-output speakers (often horn or pendant types rather than ceiling tiles), placed and aimed to cut through the noise, and an amplifier with enough headroom so pages stay clear at volume instead of distorting. We measure the actual noise in your space and spec for it. The mistake we’re often called to fix is a system that was sized for a quiet room and then installed in a loud one — it’s inaudible exactly when it matters.
In many cases, yes. A properly designed paging system can support mass-notification — sending an urgent all-call or alert tone across every zone at once for severe weather, lockdowns, or evacuations.
